Ambition

I opened my phone with the intent to scroll
To waste my mind away
But every video took a bigger mental toll
Every video was telling me to pray
To pray for the man who died on a stage
For his family and for his mission
Telling me that we can’t just turn a page
Because this affects future ambition
The ambition of my generation
Of who I become and who my neighbor is
The videos told me to pray for this nation
For the twenty-fourth anniversary of what is missed
Two towers falling down
Lost like so many a soul
It’s hard to hear above the sound
The gun shots of which I’m told
That’s only the beginning of a fallen nation
Are we God’s chosen people
Or are we our own alien invasion
Because even standing on my tall steeple
I don’t see much hope for future generations
